Le Zeitst est un terme allemand signifiant « l'esprit du temps », utilisé notamment dans la philosophie de l'histoire. Il a été théorisé par Hegel puis par Heidegger. Il dénote le climat intellectuel ou culturel d'une époque.
Le Zeitgeist reflète une conception du monde prévalente à une période particulière de l'évolution socio-culturelle.
Il se différencie du Volksgeist ("Esprit du peuple"), qui décrit l'âme d'une nation particulière. À l'opposé, le concept ultime de Weltgeist ("Esprit du Monde"), initialement défini par Hegel, tend à peindre l'esprit immuable de l'humanité, actif depuis le début de l'histoire humaine. Le Weltgeist donne l'élan à la réalisation des esprits historiques de différentes nations (les Volksgeist). (source)
